How are ear infections treated?
An ear infection typically describes a viral or bacterial infection in the middle ear (acute otitis media). If symptoms are due to a bacterial infection, a physician will likely prescribe antibiotics. If a viral infection is to blame, a combination of pain relievers and ear drops may be recommended to soothe symptoms until the virus has run its course.
Not all ear pain can be traced back to an ear infection, but it’s important to seek medical care if your symptoms persist more than a day, are severe in nature, or are accompanied by fluid or discharge from the ear.
